This hands-on workshop explored the possibilities of circular resources in ceramics, starting with materials that might otherwise be discarded. Participants brought glass from home, as well as wood ashes and rusted metal, and we began by crushing, cleaning and preparing these materials together.

The workshop was organised around three workstations: ash, glass and oxides. At each station, participants explored how these materials could be blended, tested and transformed into ceramic glazes, while learning how different material compositions behaved in the kiln. The testing process offered a practical introduction to making glazes from recycled and reclaimed resources, with participants also experimenting with their own material combinations.

To close the experience, each participant glazed a hanging tile featuring the RR logo, using circular glazes from vuur collective’s circular glaze library.

vuur collective is a shared ceramic workshop/playground/research hub in Amsterdam West exploring sustainable, locally sourced, and regenerative materials, co-founded by Yuval Harel, Benedetta Pompili, and Hannah Rose Whittle.

Central to vuur is a commitment to participatory learning and accountable sourcing of raw materials. On the one hand the collective offers a non-institutional platform where makers, artists, and designers can engage with circular materials and collaborative research through workshops, events and lectures. On the other hand, members can make and learn through hands-on experimentation, sharing tools, methods, and findings to build a growing and site-responsive archive of material practices.
